Writing for the Spooky Season

Writer: Sierra BurkeSierra Burke

Writing in the fall is one of my favorite times to write. It evokes some of my most romantic images with the colors and the harvest smells. But then there is the Spooky Season.

Even as a romance writer I can't ignore the lore and mystique of this magical time of year. So every Halloween I take some time to give pause and write with the special emotions evoked in late fall.

The magic of writing for All Hollow's Eve is that it opens many creative opportunities. If your larger writing project lends to it, this season can offer inspiration for a unique twist in your plot or storyline, or for the introduction of a new character.

Alternatively, Spooky Season may be just the time to take that short break from your larger project and work on a poem or craft a short story. As an author, it is important to capture the inspiration offered by the world around us. Not all of the work we create or all of the words we write need to go to the publisher. Every opportunity is a chance to plant a seed to be used in a future work.

My latest book, A Walk in the Woods, has incorporated just such a seed. I am anything but an author of horror. However, in the middle of this novella I captured the nugget of my one attempt at a horror creation.

So be inspired and write for the Spooky Season. Happy Halloween.
